Denver History

MinersDenver was founded in November 1858 as a mining town during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush in western Kansas Territory. The first settlement that later became Denver was Montana City, located on the banks of the South Platte River.

General William Larimer was a land speculator from Kansas who placed cottonwood logs to stake a claim on the hill overlooking the South Platte River and Cherry Creek in November 1858. He named the site Denver City to honor Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver. Larimer sold parcels in the town to merchants and miners, with the intention of creating a major city that would cater to new emigrants. Denver City was a frontier town based on servicing local miners with gambling, saloons, livestock and goods trading.

Denver City was incorporated on November 7, 1861. Denver City shortened its name to just Denver in 1865 when Denver City became the Territorial Capital. In 1876, Denver became the state capital when Colorado was admitted to the Union.

Following World War II, the city boomed, doubling in population since 1960. In the 1990’s, Denver grew by 30 percent. People from all walks of life have made Denver their home, creating a city diverse in culture. Today, Denver’s population is approximately 2.6 million, making Denver the largest urban center in the nation.
